    Why convert AVIF to JPG?

AVIF is one of the newest image formats on the web. It is based on the AV1 video codec and often produces files even smaller than WebP, so more and more sites serve their images as AVIF.

Support outside the browser is still thin. Many photo viewers, Office apps, messengers and upload forms do not recognise AVIF files at all. Converting to JPG gives you a file that works everywhere.

    What is an AVIF file?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format from the Alliance for Open Media. It compresses better than JPG and WebP but is not yet supported by many desktop programs.

Why can’t I open AVIF images on Windows?

Older Windows versions and many image viewers lack an AVIF decoder. Converting to JPG avoids the need to install extensions or codecs.

Will the JPG be bigger than the AVIF?
