No extra quality is lost. PNG stores every decoded pixel losslessly. The file may be larger than the original because PNG does not use lossy compression.
Why does my AI file fail to convert?
It was probably saved without PDF compatibility. Re-save it in Illustrator with “Create PDF Compatible File” switched on.
