Why convert JPG to PNG?
Every time a JPG is edited and saved again, it is compressed again and loses a little more detail. Converting to PNG once stops that: from then on, every save is lossless.
PNG is also required by some tools and templates, for example certain icon generators, print-on-demand uploads and design apps. Note that converting does not create a transparent background on its own; the white area of a JPG stays white until you remove it in an editor.

Frequently asked questions
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. The PNG is an exact copy of the decoded JPG, including any existing compression artefacts. What it does is protect the image from further loss when you edit and save it again.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No. A JPG has no transparency information, so the PNG will have the same solid background. You need an editor or a background remover to make areas transparent.
Why is my PNG file so large?
PNG is lossless and is not designed for photos. A photo-like image takes much more space as PNG than as JPG.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no upload, so there is no server limit. Very large images, above about 100 megapixels, may hit your browser’s canvas size limit.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. formatmath converts files with code that runs inside your browser. Your files are never uploaded, stored or seen by us.
Is it free?
Yes. There is no watermark and no daily limit. An account is optional and only keeps a history of your conversions.
